The Best Garden Gloves Depend on the Task at Hand

Garden gloves come in many styles and materials. Depending on the task at hand, we wear leather, "rubberized", or for more delicate planting operations, the heavy duty nitrile gloves do the trick.

Leather gloves handle the heavy duty jobs, where we might get scraped, poked, or blistered. When pruning roses or pulling up horse nettles, the tough leather is thorn resistant.  Because gloves offer a degree of cushioning, we can apply more strength and force than that of bare hands especially when using tools.

Having worked as landscapers, building contractors, nurserymen, and gardeners for over 4 decades, we've run through our share of gloves. After 40 years, we keep coming back to Wells Lamont leather gloves.

Leather – Best Garden Gloves for Thorns and Other Tough Tasks

The Wells Lamont motto since 1907 has been, "we're stubborn about quality". Hence their featured logo is a mule. They have a huge selection for all seasons, a range of sizes for men and women, and specific chores.

Our current best leather garden gloves are the 1132 model made of pliable, puncture resistant leather, with reinforced leather palm, and a cinch that tightens around the wrist. The 3000 plus overall 4.5 stars on Amazon reflect our own positive experience.

Latex – Best Garden Gloves for Dexterity

Some jobs require more nimble fingers, such as transplanting or handling small objects like screws. While we often doff the gloves and work dirty jobs barehanded, it's a challenge to remove embedded grime. I'm an investment educator and it's just not cool to show up at a workshop of several hundred people with dirt under my fingernails.

So our go-to gloves are the WorkPro Eco Latex gloves. They fit comfortably, keeping the hands protected while the fingers remain nimble. They are also machine washable and water-resistant. These garden gloves come in a six pair package.

Nitrile – Best Disposable Garden Gloves for Damp Work

When working in really moist soil, which includes seeding flats of seedling mix, we like the disposable type made of latex or similar material. We prefer the heavier duty options. Gloveworks Nitrile disposable gloves are the kind auto mechanics use; they can be used several times over before being tossed. They come in a box of 100 but you're bound to find a lot of different uses beyond garden duty.

These surgical type gloves don't breathe, so your hands will get sweaty and wind up with pruny fingers. Fortunately, this condition is temporary and a minor trade-off for not having to scrub grime out of your pores, cuticles, and fingernails.

Latex – Garden Gloves With Claws for Digging

The current number one best garden gloves on Amazon are these claw gloves. We didn't love them, as they didn't last very long, and they're awkward to use for things other than digging. But since they're the number one bestselling garden glove amongst all gloves, they may be a good fit for you.

The greatest advantage? They take the place of a trowel, so you have two tools in one: gloves and a digger, helping you move through your task quickly. The ones that last longer are those that have a snugger fit, providing less floppy mobility that leads to more wear and tear.

Suede Leather Sheepskin or Deerskin – Best Gardening Gloves for Women

Lotion – Invisible Gloves

If you want the protection of gloves but the real feel of the soil, you might try a shielding lotion called "Invisible Gloves". You pre-apply a coating to your hands and then, after the job, simply wash off. There are several brands available, that serve different purposes.

Best Invisible Gloves – in order of our preference:

  1. Workman's Friend – moisturizing barrier against glue, grease, grime, dirt, paint, oils; lasts up to 4 hours
  2. Blue Magic – barrier against grease, grime, oil, dirt, chemical and washes right off
  3. Gloves in a Bottle – medicated protective barrier; not as effective against dirt and grime.

These lotion gloves have an added advantage of medicating for cases of psoriasis and moisturizing for dry and cracked conditions. These kinds of treatments can make a huge difference toward protecting your hands in winter conditions especially.
